Las Vegas - at least the Las Vegas the world knows - was born on Fremont Street or "Glitter Gulch". Over the years, "The Strip" has become the focal point of the city and Fremont Street decayed. Over the last several years the city fathers have begun rebuilding Glitter Gulch and have created the Freemont Street Experience. A 5-block pedestrian mall covered with a neon canopy and lined with big-screen theaters, retail shopping and eateries that range from hot dog stands to elegant restaurants. This is Las Vegas' premiere "family-friendly" environment. What had become an unsafe relic has been renovated into a safe environment for tourist families who are looking for lights beyond the casinos. And they aren't hard to find! Some of the original neon signs that once lit Glitter Gulch are being refurbished and installed once again. This "Neon Museum" provides a nice reminder of the Vegas which once was.
